CLOSED WORK PERMIT

In contrast to open work permits, closed work permits require you to work for a designated employer in Canada and to perform a designated position.
The service on this page is to apply for a Work Permit in Canada. For applications outside Canada, please refer to the Work Permit.

Need LMIA

In most cases, an employer is required to apply for a labor market impact assessment LMIA before applying for a closed work permit.

Exemption from LMIA

If the applicant meets one of the following conditions:

  1. Religious people,
  2. Visiting scholars,
  3. Internal mobility of multinational companies,
  4. Has obtained CSQ or provincial nomination certificate.
  5. It is then possible to waive LMIA’s work in Canada, where the employer is required to go through the guarantee process and pay a fee of $230.

Where to apply

Work permits can usually only be applied overseas or at the border. Both methods have a certain chance of refusal. If the applicant originally holds a work permit or a student visa, or the applicant’s spouse holds a work permit or a student visa, the applicant can submit a work permit application within the territory. Such an application is generally not refused.
