DESIGNATED LEARNING INSTITUTIONS

Beginning June 1, 2014, only students enrolled in the Designated Learning Institution (DLI) will be granted a study permit and will be able to work part-time during full-time professional courses.

Relationship between study permit and designated institution

Projects for up to 6 months do not need to be in a designated institution, but an application for a study permit must have an offer letter from the designated institution.
With a study permit, you can study for a non-language course at a designated institution on a full-time basis. You can work 20 hours a week and work full-time during the holidays.

Relationship between work sign, spouse work sign and designated institution after graduation

Not all designated institutions can obtain post-graduation work permits. Only public institutions, Quebec private colleges or private colleges can apply for a post-graduation work permit or apply for a work permit for a spouse.
Although most private institutions are designated institutions, they cannot apply for post-graduation work permits, nor can they apply for open-ended work permits for spouses.

Determine if a school is a designated institution

  1. All primary and secondary schools default to DLI.
  2. All schools in Quebec that have access to the Quebec Reception Letter (CAQ) default to DLI.
  3. Other cases can only refer to the DLI List of the IRCC Official Website.
